  1. The first, and perhaps the biggest, shock was when I realized that the book is set 16 YEARS after the last one Tom and Hester in their thirties, have a fifteen year old daughter named Wren Anchorage has long since settled on dry land and have been content with a simple life there. Now, I ve said this before, but this series has a very odd and unusual style of narration, the tone, if you would It s dystopia, the first two were YA but this one was a mix since the main characters were 15 30 years ol [...]

  2. Between the end of Predator s Gold and the beginning of Infernal Devices, sixteen years have passed In that time, Anchorage has become a static city, Hester and Tom have married, and their daughter has grown into a teenager A huge risk for the author to take I was emotionally invested in Hester and Tom, and wasn t ready to pass that on to their daughter, Wren Luckily, they still play a large part in the storyline.Wren did not make a good first impression on me Within the first 50 pages, she s ca [...]

  3. 2.5 starsPhilip Reeve s Hungry City Chronicles is one of the original and imaginative young adult series out there Infernal Devices is the third book in the series and it is set 18 years after Predator s Gold.Tom and Hester are all grown up with a teenage daughter Tom is a loving husband and a doting father to Wren Hester I ll get to her later They live in the static city of Anchorage and their lives are dull and uneventful in contrast to the adventures of the previous book It is Wren s yearnin [...]

  4. This sixteen years later quel suffers from the main problem of letting your characters grow up off screen when you get back to them they are no longer the people you grew to love or hate or at least know Hester, the grumpy but lovable urchin from the previous books, has become a hardened, hateful and hate filled grown up with next to no good qualities She has also who has somehow turned into a warrior extraordinaire in the years she spent in the sleepy backwater of Anchorage in Vineland, which s [...]

  6. I don t know how it s possible but this series is really growing on me, and the books keep improving as the series goes on Usually I find books about the children of main characters insufferably annoying, but this one surprised me And true to the form of the past books, so did the characters I don t want to spoil anyone s read but I have to say that my favorite thing about this author and this series is that the characters often do things I don t expect, but than that, neither do they do the op [...]

  7. More Hungry City Chronicles More towns on wheels More oddly obsessive descriptions of the characters clothing More action, traction This book leaps forward 16 years from Predator s Gold Young Wren Natsworthy is kidnapped after her plans to run away go awry, and her parents, Tom and Hester the heroes of the previous two books chase after her and the three of them are swiftly embroiled in political intrigue, danger, entanglements with evil cyborgs, Falling in Like With Handsome African Men, etc e [...]

  8. Predator s Gold had a cosy and happy ending Anchorage had escaped Arkangel and found refuge in the green parts of America, the city s ordeals were over, and Hester was pregnant with Tom s child Terrible things had happened to Anna Fang, and there was a dark implication that war was coming to the world but that would never trouble Anchorage, which was secret and safe.In Infernal Devices, sixteen years have passed, and Tom and Hester s teenage daughter Wren is bored of her backwater life and achin [...]

  9. 5 starsSo i think this one is much better than the first two and i really liked how things developed in this one.World building was brilliant as always but a few extra elements were added which again should have been hard to imagine but weren t It s very vivid and really ties in to the plot well. The characterization was much better in this one and seemed to not only make sense but really bring the characters to some interesting places Tom was better although still a bit all over the place and no [...]

  10. Infernal Devices begins as any solid next book in a series should It continues on from where the last book left off Several years after Predator s Gold Tom and Hester have a daughter And she naturally grows bored with the placid nature of life in the hidden wilderness of America As a result she ends up plunging Tom and Hester into another whirlwind adventure that continues their adventures with old adversaries and some new ones In short this really is a brilliant continuation of a creative young [...]

  11. This book was so much fun a great piece of YA steampunk I particularly loved all the snarky asides about Brighton and its artistic culture, gags about fringe shows and performance artists, hen parties and vomit are all in there There are also some fantastic wacky names for the airships even Dick Dastardly gets a mention among those The plot is exciting and action packed, well written, but it s the gags that really made it for me.

  12. The author s unwillingness to let a character actually stay dead after killing them grows especially tiresome here It makes most of the events of this book and the previous ones feel rather pointless That, combined with some breaks of character, pushed the story beyond the limits what I found to be believable.

  13. Well That was really excellent. The Hungry City Chronicles has been quite good so far I had quibbles, especially in the character development department, but overall the first two installments were quite excellent But I kind of wished I d found the series when I was in late middle or high school, when I was in line with the targeted age bracket The first two books were exactly the kind of books I would have adored as a teenager.Infernal Devices is the first book in the series that has really esc [...]

  14. Viisitoista vuotta on kulunut siit , kun Tom Natsworthy ja Hester Shaw asettuivat aloilleen Anchorageen Nyt heill on tyt r, Wren, jonka harkitsematon toiminta johtaa katastrofiin, ja niinp Tom ja Hester joutuvat l htem n pelastamaan j lkikasvuaan Se johdattaa heid t Brightoniin, jossa majapaikkaansa pit muuan vanha, joskaan ei niin mieluisa tuttava Kaiken keskell on salaper inen Tinakirja, jonka sis lt m tieto saattaa olla tuhoisaakin tuhoisampi v riin k siin joutuessaan Tuhon aikakirja Karisto, [...]

  15. This was touch and go at the start Yet again And it wasn t until after the 55% mark that it pulled me in so much I didn t want to put it down.I wasn t really liking any of the characters and I think at some level, I knew what to expect I m definitely giving Hester the benefit of the doubt I started not liking her partway through the last book, but her in this What s happened to her If this was something that would address such things, i d give her the benefit of the doubt and seriously consider [...]

  16. Interesting concept It s the world as we don t know it, where cities move and pirates abound It s fantastic in its idea of the world, but I didn t particularly enjoy the style of writing Having said that, it is meant for early teenagers, which is probably why I didn t find the main character particularly intriguing I thought her story somewhat dull and typical Her parents, however, were far fascinating Hester, in particular, is the character who grasped my attention She s a scarred woman who ha [...]

  17. The Hungry Cities really took a turn for the worse with this one I like how the story skips forward 16 years, and resettles around their daugher, but the central plot is thrown together hapzardly Above else, i think, im missing the excitement of a interesting and moving city Infernal Devices does have Brighton, but Philip Reeve never manages to describes it in a satisfying manner, in the end i was still struggling to figure out how it looked Plus its social World seemed so dull.Characters are pr [...]

  18. I liked this book, but I think it s the weakest yet in the series For one, letting your main characters grow up between books rarely works, because they inevitably don t turn out to really be the same characters any Which I think is often why authors do itey re tired of the character as is and really want to work with something new Totally understandable my attempts at fiction I m frequently either sick of or annoyed at my characters 100 pages into it, but readers haven t spent nearly as much t [...]

  19. This was so disappointing, and I blame the fact that they had a child What did I say inmy review of Predator s Gold Children ruin everything. This is 16 years after the events of Predator s Gold, and like I predicted, Tom and Hester have had to grow up And their grown up incarnations are terrible Tom is a naive, dull, gullible middle aged man Hester, my precious Hester, is a horrible, selfish woman who hates everything and everyone and doesn t care about anything And their daughter is a stupid br [...]

  20. I didn t realize until after this book was given to me that it was the third part of a series However, it referenced the past enough where I was able to keep up and still enjoy it.In the beginning, I wasn t sure how I was going to feel about it, but it grew on me It took a little while for me to feel connected to the characters, but by the end, I felt attached to almost all of them in some way Now I m curious to how the last book finishes the story, but it might be best for me to take a look at [...]

  21. Oh my god I think I m going to cry Them feels This is so good and so life like that I felt like I was being sucked into the book s pages I won t spoil anything but I advise everyone to start reading this series it s brilliant Now I must wait until I can get back to a relative s house to get the fourth and final instalment in this series I just know I m going to cry

  22. This is book three in Reeve s Hungry City Chronicles I don t read very much science fiction, but this series has intrigued me Big cities on the move that eat smaller cities, an opposing force called the Green Storm, and well rounded characters, all make it a worthwhile read You ll definitely want to start at the beginning of the series, though That would beMortal Engines.

  23. 1 Read this series2 Read the Twilight series I actually haven t read it.3 Answer the question Who would win in a fight, Grike Yeah or Edward Cullen Booo 4 The answer is Grike.

  24. Sixteen years have passed since the events of Predator s Gold and Anchorage is no longer on the move, having settled down at the edge of Vineland Living on Anchorage in Vineland are Freya, Caul, Tom and Hester and Wren, the baby that Hester was carrying who is now a bored 15 year old, longing for excitement. When a charming pirate one of Caul s old crew turns up in Anchorage in Vineland looking for a valuable object, Wren seizes her chance for an adventure only for it to go wrong almost immediate [...]

  25. Infernal Devices, by Philip Reeve, is the third book in the author s Predator Cities Quartet This is a series of fantasy adventure stories aimed at young adults but enjoyable for all competent readers. In this instalment, Tom and Hester have settled in the now static city of Anchorage where it came to rest on the Dead Continent, presumed sunk by all who knew of its existence Their daughter, Wren, was born here and has known nothing but a peaceful if rather lonely existence in her fifteen years Ha [...]

  26. Book 3 in this remarkable series delivered much of the same we all loved in the first two complex characters, a ridiculously fast paced plot, a rich world, and deep moral dilemmas Sadly it was almost ruined by the one dimensional, incredibly cliched new POV character we are subjected to for half of the book Wren is the daughter of Hester and Tom, and thoroughly bored Cue entirely expected teenage rebellion, running away from home, and realizing she s made a mistake Despite all this, Wrens pluck [...]

  27. Infernal Devices is the third book in the Mortal Engines Quartet, and it s better than the second one, but it still can t quite grasp the greatness of the first. This is not a direct sequel, in fact, it s set 16 years after the first one For the most part the transition is smooth and natural however, one of the returning characters is suddenly extremely unlikeable and that was kinda disappointing. The story is straightforward and unconvoluted and it works that way The third act is very suspenseful [...]
